Statement

My imagery depicts alternative role models for females who are strong, assertive and punk rock sexy. Half of my obsession with girls in powerful roles stems from comic books I read when I was young, like Sailor Moon. Comic books have also been the base of my desire and interest in drawing from an early age. A lot of my inspiration also comes from female rock stars and classic punk music. When I was in grade school it was Cindy Lauper and the ladies from the B-52’s, and today it is bands like L7 and women like Exene Cervenka. Since I usually create drawings intuitively, my images can generally be seen as a small mirror or self-portrait of my own experiences. Printmaking is a rich and beautiful way of translating and defining my drawings. I am interested in the multiple aspect of printmaking as a means of defining craft and a way of increasing the accessibility of my artwork. The print mediums that I am most engaged with are the mediums that are closest to drawing. I am especially interested in stone lithography as a direct way of drawing, along with etching and stenotype. Lately my work continues to deal with the female figure and themes of contrast or fantasy. I have begun to incorporate life references in my drawings, as opposed to creating my images solely from my head. Also, I am focusing on making more technically complex prints and fuller images where my ladies exist in more of an incorporated environment. However, the general theme no matter what size or medium my concept is always that of a contemporary, independent female.
